Previously, it was believed that the only risk of adding nicotine in the liquid for steam generators is the appearance of dependence. But there is harm and more serious.
“There is an old saying that people smoke because of nicotine, because it is highly addictive, but they die from tar,” says Holly Middlekauff, one of the authors of the study and a cardiologist at the University of California, Los Angeles. This conviction led to the appearance in the 70s of the 20th century of nicotine substitutes such as special plasters and chewing gums that help people quit smoking. Today, for many, electronic steam generators are replacing these facilities.
Scientists are still arguing about the safety of electronic cigarettes. Last year, the Royal Royal College of Physicians recommended that tobacco smokers switch to steam generators to quit. At the same time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States stated: there is no evidence that electronic cigarettes work as a means of stopping smoking.
But there are more and more studies that prove the harm of steam generators.
In 2015, it became known, that vaporayzery damage the immune system of mice. And last year it turned out, that electronic cigarettes produce 31 harmful chemicals, and some of these substances can cause cancer.
Another study conducted by Midklauff and published earlier this year, showed that people using electronic cigarettes almost every day have biomarkers that increase the risk of heart disease in tobacco smokers. Among these biomarkers is an increase in the level of adrenaline in the heart, which predisposes to poor heart rate and heart attacks, as well as the occurrence of oxidative stress, which can lead to arteriosclerosis.
This study, however, has not shown what exactly causes these changes. In liquids for steam generators, in addition to nicotine, various flavors and solvents may be contained. To find the cause of the above biomarkers, Midclaus invited 33 healthy people who do not smoke or hover. Once a month they came to the laboratory, where they had to use electronic cigarettes for 30 minutes. Once a liquid was with nicotine, once – without, and once the subjects received pacifiers without any substances.
The researchers made blood tests and measured the heart rate of the participants.
It was found that the subjects increased the level of adrenaline in the heart only after using electronic cigarettes with nicotine.
The issue of oxidative stress remains open, as the experiment was aimed at identifying only one marker.
This is a fairly small study, so you cannot believe it 100%. It also did not show that hovering is directly related to heart disease. One can only conclude that if a person smokes ordinary cigarettes, then the transition to electronic cigarettes should help him, since they contain much less carcinogens. But if you do not smoke at all, Midklauff strongly recommends that you do not take steam generators at all.
